See How the Wealthy Lived Nearly 150 Years at the Fulton Mansion in Rockport, Texas

One of the most well-known and beautiful historical mansions is in the small town of Rockport, Texas. Overlooking Aransas Bay, you can’t help but wonder what life was like back then. But you know for sure, it was comfortable for the owners of this house.

The Fulton Mansion

The mansion was built in 1877 by Colonel George Fulton and wife, Harriet Smith. George was an engineer. Harriet inherited land from her dad, who was an influential politician in Texas, so they moved to Rockport. That’s when George helped found the Coleman-Mathis-Fulton Cattle Company which increased their wealth. That money built their house, originally called Oakhurst.

They spared no expense, making it luxurious and continuing the life of grandeur they were accustomed to. Make sure to look up and all around as you’re touring the house. The intricate and stunning design details are everywhere.

It held two concrete cisterns to collect rainwater, as well as a system to provide water for sinks and toilets. A gas generator kept the lights lit – no candles were needed in this mansion. The furniture, decorations, and adornments in the house were expensive and extravagant for the time, but typical of wealthy people.

How was the house built so well it has withstood numerous hurricanes, including Hurricane Harvey in 2017? Remember that George was an engineer, so his design used stacked pine boards to make the walls five inches thick.

Sadly, George and Harriet only lived in the house for about 16 years. George died in 1893 and Harriet moved to Cincinnati to be near her daughter. The daughters inherited the mansion but sold it quickly. In 1976 the State of Texas purchased it and began restoring it. In 2008 it became the property of the Texas Historical Commission.

Today the mansion is an impressive reminder of the beauty of the architectural style of the day. While open to public tours, the facility is also host to educational and community events, keeping it in the minds of the community all year long.

Be aware that the house is only partially accessible, with a wheelchair lift to the first floor but only stairs to the second floor.

The mansion is located at 317 S. Fulton Beach Rd., Rockport TX 78382.

On site, there is an Education and History Center with a gift shop and restrooms.

Where to Stay Near the Mansion

There are several decent hotels in the Rockport area, but to feel a little bit like the Fultons, stay at the Lighthouse Inn at Aransas Bay, within walking distance of the Fulton Mansion. Its Victorian design reminds you of old-time lodging, with wonderful ocean views as it sits right next to the bay. We were able to sit on our little patio, just steps from the water, watching wildlife and people going out on the private pier to fish. The little restaurant serves drinks and nightly meals, which you can enjoy while looking out the windows over the bay. A complimentary breakfast buffet is also included. An adorable little lending library is in the front corner of the facility, and the outdoor pool is the perfect temperature.

Where to Eat Near the Mansion

Even if you aren’t staying at the Lighthouse Inn, check out their restaurant, or any of the several wonderful close-by restaurants, such as The Boiling PotCharlotte Plummers, and Moondog Seaside Eatery. Yes, we tried them all and the food was amazing at all of them.
